In 1958, while Brazil was celebrating its first world title, a group of teenagers from Araguari, in the interior of Minas Gerais, defied barriers by forming the first officially registered women's soccer team in the country after the sport was banned in the early 1940s. Against prejudice and a lack of encouragement, the players lived a brief but meteoric dream, filling stadiums and winning admirers in various parts of the country. The fame of the pioneers brought out the wrath of church members and conservatives in Minas Gerais society, who revived a decree created by Getúlio Vargas that banned women from practicing sports considered “incompatible with feminine nature”. About to take an even bigger step - representing Brazil in an international competition - they were denounced to the authorities and banned from playing soccer or even talking about it.
